NST demo
we've been so busy that we forgot to blog about the demonstartion in front of NST last friday. It all started with those infamous danish cartoons. new straits times (NST) got embroiled in it when they printed a follow up comic to it... the ensuing controversy saw NST apologising on the front page and an attempted demonstration in front of balai berita (NST hq) - i say attempted because the police were in full force on that day - riot gear ready and all...and in the end, the riot never happened.
Not knowing this kavi and i went off to witness the rioting (if any)...
the sun was blazing in full force and a small crowd had gathered at the side of nst. police had cordoned off the road so no cars could enter, and they put up blockads right in front of nst, so no one could go in or out... the police helicopter was buzzing low adding to the drama of it all... and as is mandatory in any malaysian riot or event, the ice cream man was there vending his wares... this is the thing... how do these guys know when a riot is coming on? do they subscribe to some kind of special bulletin that tells them when to go...and most importantly what would we do if we went for one of these performances and we find no ice-cream man there?
anyway after standing for half an hour in the hot sun looking at some policemen, posing for some press photos and gossiping with the crowd (this too being typically malaysian behaviour), we bought some ice creams and wandered back to the office. the helicopter was still being dramatic and hovering - why we will never know....
sadly despite all our efforts, our photos were not in the papers the next day at all!!! tsk tsk... good news was, neither was anyone else's.
and better news was that no one got sacked over the comics (this just goes to show what nice warm wonderful human beings we are at this office - despite the fact that if people lost jobs, we would have more business [being employment lawyers], we are happy that people didn't lose their jobs. it just brings a tear to my eye...)
